Contributions to the Science-Practice-Transfer at the Chair of Work, Human Resources and Leadership

Practice-oriented teaching plays a central role in the course offerings of the Chair of Work, Human Resources and Leadership. The starting point is the approach of coached self-study with practice weeks, which was decisively shaped by the chair holder, and which is used in every teaching module in the part-time Master Organizational Management and is increasingly being incorporated into teaching at the Faculty of Business and Economics. Central to this approach is that students work independently but with scientific guidance on real cases and thus translate scientific knowledge directly into problem solutions for practice. The practical transfer is integrated into the modules and interlocked with the main topics. It does not take place in formats decoupled from module content. Transfer focuses on scientifically validated competence dimensions.

In the “Into Practice” field of action of the BMBF-funded Quality Pact for Teaching project inSTUDIESplus, these tried and tested practice-oriented formats are being further developed under the direction of Prof. Dr. Uta Wilkens and made available to a large number of students at the Ruhr-Universität. Projects in the field of measures include the learning lab on Product Service Systems, the conversation simulation “The Difficult Conversation” with actors, and the modules “Immigration and Labor Market Integration” and “Experiencing Uncertainty and Coping Strategies in an Entrepreneurial Context,” which follow the approach of coached self-study and are integrated into the curriculum at a number of faculties.

Coached self-study with practice weeks

The modules for the part-time Master Organizational Management as well as for Master students at the Faculty of Business and Economics follow the approach of coached self-study. Scientific principles are developed on the basis of concrete practical cases from the students’ range of experience. In practical weeks in the company, problem-solving approaches for concrete challenges of the company partner are then developed in accordance with the module focal points. Due to the interdisciplinary composition of the student groups and the scientific supervision, complex solutions can be developed in a context-specific manner.

Company excursion in the term paper seminar

Since SS 2015, a company excursion has been offered every year in the term paper seminar on “Deepening the Fundamentals of Human Resources and Leadership Research” in the Bachelor’s degree program in Management & Economics. Here, students are given the opportunity to gain insights from practice for their own scientific questions and, in the process, to further develop their methodological skills and questioning technique. The corporate partners are mostly medium-sized companies from the Ruhr region. You can find more information

Learning Lab on Product Service Systems: Transdisciplinary Learning Lab

The “Transdisciplinary Learning Lab” represents a transdisciplinary event format for master and advanced bachelor students in economics and engineering. In the business simulation, students experience the competitive situation from the perspective of a product-service system (PSS). Working in interdisciplinary teams, you will manage the value creation processes to deliver a PSS offering in the digital ecosystem based on closely interlinked product and service elements. Students develop competencies relevant to success for working in PSS. This development process is accompanied by repeated competence measurements, the results of which are incorporated into competence research. You can find more information

Conversation simulation "The difficult conversation" in the module "Fundamentals of personnel and leadership research

Since the winter semester 16/17, interview simulations have been offered as a fixed component of the bachelor’s module “Fundamentals of Personnel and Leadership Research”, in which students slip into the role of a manager. Practice-relevant conversations are held in small groups with actors trained for this purpose. This gives students the opportunity to reflect on their professional behavior in parallel with their academic socialization. The small groups are led by experienced HR managers, who supplement the students’ feedback with experiential knowledge from the field and subsequently provide tips from the field for the continuous development of the cases. Integration of practice partners in the "Immigration and labor market integration" project

In the interdisciplinary Master’s seminar “Labor Market Integration and Immigration”, students develop concepts for the integration of refugees into the German labor market in exchange with representatives of the field. The aim is to work on the issues identified through the exchange in groups using scientific methods and to derive recommendations for action for actors from practice. These will be presented and discussed in a final event with practice partners. You can find more information

Integration of practice partners in the project "Uncertainty experience and coping strategies in the entrepreneurial context -. Simulation-based learning approaches."

In the master seminar “Uncertainty experience and coping strategies in the entrepreneurial context” students explore the evaluation of and behavior in situations of uncertainty and develop coping strategies in group work. Based on impulses from panel discussions with practice guests and drawing on theories of decision-making and risk perception, student groups design coaching sessions on selected scenarios of uncertainty. The goal is to motivate for entrepreneurship and to eliminate fears of founding a company. You can find more information
